Exploration of the area around the margins of the Oraparinna Diapir for commercial barite deposits has consisted of aerial photographic studies, plus ground geological traverses of photo-interpreted fault structures, and geological mapping, trenching and bulk sampling of any barite veins encountered. Twenty-nine unexploited barite occurrences, including six that were known about already, have been investigated : of these, eleven are considered to be potentially mineable. No large, pure barite deposits were located during the current investigation. At the most prospective new deposit, Cement Square, located 1.4 miles north-northwest of Carey Hill, a 300 foot-long vein of good quality barite outcrops within the Bunyeroo Formation, wherein it dips vertically and varies in width from 2 to 12 feet; here probable open-cut mineable reserves of 10,000 tons (to 50 feet in depth) have been estimated. Two larger deposits having high silica contamination, but which are free of iron impurities, have been located east of the abandoned Appealinna copper mine - the Vincent and Howard barite lodes. The previously discovered Linkie's barite lode, with reserves of 200,000 tons to a depth of 50 feet, is the largest of the now known impure lodes, and may be mineable if the price of barite increases, which would then allow magnetic separation of the iron impurities. A secondary target of exploration on the diapir was possible economic copper mineralisation remaining in the vicinity of the historic Appealinna mine. An IP/resistivity survey was run across this prospect, and consisted of eight lines spaced 1000 feet apart, with an initial electrode array interval of 200 feet, which was considered sufficient to resolve any buried, narrow chalcopyrite-haematite lodes which might be present. As well, a further five reconnaissance IP lines were similarly run over nearby minor copper workings. Several weak IP anomalies were located at Appealinna prospect within the diapir margin breccia zone, while others were seen at the Mount Emily and Gumtree workings. Prospecting and geochemical sampling of abandoned copper workings and of iron-rich vein material from locations outside of the diapir was performed in conjunction with the barite investigations. It was recommended that six percussion drillholes be put into the better IP anomalies seen at the Appealinna Prospect. If this work proves successful, further drilling of the similar anomalies at the Mount Emily prospect should be considered. Additional, more detailed IP surveying of existing IP anomalies should also be done.
