Exploration for possible economic basement-hosted Roxby Downs style base metal sulphide deposits was undertaken in an area located approximately 90 km north-west of Woomera. Existing regional geophysical airborne survey coverage was too sparse to adequately define drill targets, so a more detailed low-level aeromagnetic and aerial radiometric survey (of 1750 line km at 800 m flight line spacing and 90 m sensor elevation) was carried out to try to map discrete anomalies for subsequent ground geophysical delineation. Problems of poor quality management in data acquisition and processing by the contractor led to delays in follow-up work, and uncertainty about selecting which were the best anomalies to ground truth. Ultimately only a small number of low priority magnetic/gravity anomalies were defined, of which two were selected for drill testing. Two vertical rotary percussion drillholes were completed in early 1979, both penetrating to the rig's nominal depth capability of 400 m. Each hole bottomed when still within the inferred upper to middle part of the Pandurra Formation, and therefore the targeted top of the crystalline basement was expected to lie several hundred metres below. Consequently the source of the drilled geophysical anomalies could not be explained. No base metal values of significance were found in downhole geochemical sampling, and no subsurface radiation peaks were detected.
