The Gawler Phase 2 project is a GSSA initiative to acquire geoscientific data across the central-western Gawler Craton. As part of the acquisition phase, audio- and broadband magnetotelluric (MT) data were acquired on a grid of ~12.5 km spacing and along two NW-SE trending profiles across the Christie, Wilgena, and Fowler Domains and the Harris Greenstone Belt. MT images the bulk conductivity of the subsurface and can help to understand the lithosphere beneath surface expressions of crustal domains and faults and address questions on the tectonic evolution of Australia. Signatures from past tectonothermal events can be retained in the lithosphere for hundreds of millions of years when these events deposit conductive mineralogy that is imaged by MT as electrically conductive pathways. This project vastly improved the coverage of MT data across the study area and helped shed light on the mineral potential of the region, for Ni-Cu and Au-style deposits. The study area covers known deposits and prospects including Challenger Au, Aristarchus Ni-Cu, Golf Bore Au, Sahara Ni and Tarcoola Au. The MT model models have good depth sensitivity from the near surface to the lower crust (40 km).
