This collaborative project between the Geological Survey of South Australia and CSIRO Mineral Resources – Discovery Program aimed to encourage exploration and risk reduction to access the economic potential for sedimentary-hosted Cu mineralisation on the Stuart Shelf. The outcome of this project will provide industry with fundamental datasets that can be used to refine areas that have potential for sediment-hosted copper mineralisation on the Stuart Shelf and therefore advance exploration and bring forward discovery. Given the potential copper inventory for this deposit style, future discovery will contribute to South Australia’s global role in ongoing copper supply. Project benefits include accelerated development of exploration projects through enhanced industry confidence and improved access to critical data. The project aimed to improve knowledge of the basin architecture and distribution, thickness, and depth of key lithostratigraphic units within the Neoproterozoic Adelaidean Superbasin and older underlying basin deposits (including the Mesoproterozoic Pandurra Formation), which may provide key controls on the likely occurrence and location of sediment-hosted copper mineralisation within the Stuart Shelf.
