Location of all current Special Prospecting Authority Applications issued under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 (the P&GE Act supersedes the Petroleum Act 2000). A Special Prospecting Authority, while it remains in force, authorises the holder, subject to the appropriate Act and in accordance with the conditions to which the special prospecting authority is subject, to carry on in the blocks specified in the special prospecting authority the petroleum exploration operations so specified. Special Prospecting Authorities does not provide exclusive tenure rights for a maximum of 6 months. Exploration programs are subject to strict environmental and heritage conditions. Exploitation of identified resources must be made under separate petroleum production leases.

Source Data History: Special Prospecting Authority Application boundaries were sourced from the official Petroleum Register authority application documents. Authority application boundaries are legally defined to follow lines of latitude and longitude, based on potentially several geodetic datums. Processing Steps: Coordinates entered by keyboard from authority application documents. Non GDA94 coordinates transformed into GDA94. Linework cleaned to remove duplicate arcs. Data adjusted for accurate state border and coastline. Where appropriate cadastral parcels removed from authority polygons. Associated attribute data also captured from authority application documents.
Positional accuracy:Most boundary locations are constructed from lines of latitude and longitude, hence are scale independent. The accuracy of other boundaries is dependent upon the source, eg. state border, coastline, cadastre.
Attribute accuracy:Validation checks are performed periodically, resulting in an estimated 90% accuracy.
Logical consistency:The dataset contains no overshoots, undershoots or duplicate lines. All polygons representing authority applications contain only one label.
Completeness:Spatial data is 100% complete. Associated attribute data is 100% complete.
