Location of all current Preliminary Survey Licences issued under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 (the P&GE Act supersedes the Petroleum Act 2000), Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act, 1982, or Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act, 1967. A preliminary survey licence authorises the licensee to carry out a survey, environmental evaluation, or other form of assessment preparatory to the carrying out of regulated activities on land. A preliminary survey licence may authorise incidental matters such as (for example) marking out the proposed route of a pipeline on land. The rights conferred on the holder of a preliminary survey licence are not exclusive. The term of a preliminary survey licence is 1 year (renewable up to a maximum of 5 years). Comment is sought on Preliminary Survey Licences from numerous sources before granting and is subject to strict environmental and heritage conditions.

Source Data History: Preliminary Survey Licences boundaries were sourced from the official Petroleum Register licence documents. Licence boundaries are legally defined by a buffered distance and/or combined with cadastral parcels, from a proposed route, generally a pipeline. Processing Steps: Coordinates entered by keyboard from licence documents. Non GDA94 coordinates transformed into GDA94. Linework cleaned to remove duplicate arcs. Data adjusted for accurate state border and coastline. Where appropriate cadastral parcels removed from licence polygons. Associated attribute data also captured from licence documents.
Positional accuracy:Most proposed routes are constructed from lines of easting and northing coordinates, captured from a variety of sources, eg. GPS dGPS, digitised, surveyed; hence are scale dependent.
Attribute accuracy:Validation checks are performed periodically, resulting in an estimated 90% accuracy.
Logical consistency:The dataset contains no overshoots, undershoots or duplicate lines. All polygons representing licences/permits contain only one label.
Completeness:Spatial data is 100% complete. Associated attribute data is 100% complete.
