As part of the development of the Solid Geology dataset for South Australia, a broad age-based time slice concept was established to highlight the major phases of the State's geological development based on separation (as far as possible) by major breaks in the rock record. This enabled the separation of the stacked basins and basement provinces which characterise the State's geology. This systematic breakdown was intended to promote a better appreciation of the progression of geological events through space and time.

Eight time slices were identified: 路 Archaean to early Mesoproterozoic 路 Middle Mesoproterozoic 路 Late Mesoproterozoic 路 Neoproterozoic 路 Cambrian to Late Carboniferous 路 Late Carboniferous to Triassic 路 Jurassic to Cretaceous 路 Cenozoic

SA_GEODATA database holds stratigraphic logs for approximately 43 400 drillholes, coded with an age-based Map Symbol system which is also used for corporate digital map polygons, including the Mineral Geological Provinces layer. Therefore, a robust query of the SA_GEODATA log data based on the stratigraphic units represented in each of the time slice layers has enabled production of point data of stratigraphic units and top depths, separated into time slices.
