This layer contains the location of all pre-1967 onshore and offshore expired( cancelled, expired, surrendered relinquished ) Oil Exploration Licences and Oil Prospecting Licences (OEL's and OPL's) issued under the Mining(Petroleum Act 1940) between 1945 and 1967. These licences could be issued over both land and sea and were issued to provide exclusive rights to explore for petroleum resources.Data set contains the original outline and area at the time of grant. No subsequent boundaries are provided.Company reports associated with activities conducted under these various licences are available for free download from SARIG.

Source Data history: Exploration Licence /Permit (for OEL/OPL) boundaries were sourced from the official Petroleum Register and available correspondence files. Licence coordinates were all legally defined to follow lines of latitude and longitude and were based on the AGD 66 datum. However in some instances reference is made to the State Border, a 3 nautical mile strip, Hundred Boundaries and various "mileage" posts along the border. In these instances a "best guess" was applied in order to estimate the coordinates of these points or polygon boundaries. For simplicity the Border has been adopted as either 129 or 141 degrees of longitude or -26 degrees south. It is acknowledged that these values are not necessarily accurate or correct but it is sufficient to satisfy the intent. Considerable care was taken with licences having common points and boundaries and minor adjustments made to ensure licences tied with one another as was the intent at the time of grant. All available associated attribute data was captured as part of this data compilation. All coordinates were transformed into GDA94 for final presentation.

Positional accuracy:Those boundaries defined as comprised of lines of latitude and longitude have the best control and reliability. However those points associated with Mile posts, corner points, intersections or topographic features, cadastral boundaries, coast lines etc are dependent on the original source data and are rated as indicative only.
Attribute accuracy:All attribute fields for this data set have been populated with data from the official registers and correspondence of the day, resulting in a very reliable and consistent data set.
Logical consistency:All polygons representing licences contain only one label
Completeness:Spatial data is complete as this data set will not be added to in the future. Modifications are possible to fine tune boundaries if deemed necessary as new coordinate data becomes available.
