Location of all current Retention Licence/Lease Applications issued under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 (the P&GE Act supersedes the Petroleum Act 2000), Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act, 1982, or Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act, 1967 for the regulated resource or commodity of petroleum. Retention Licences/Leases protects the interest of a licensee/lessee in a discovery or a regulated resource for a reasonable period of time to properly evaluate the productivity potential of the dicovery, and/or, carry out the work necessary to bring the discovery to commercial production. Retention Licence/Lease authorizes the licensee/lessee, subject to the applicable Act and regulations and in accordance with the conditions to which the licensee/lease is subject, to explore for petroleum, and to carry on such operations and execute such works as are necessary for that purpose, in the licence/lease area, for 5 years which is renewable Comment is sought on applications for Retention Licences/Leases from numerous sources before granting. Exploration programs are subject to strict environmental and heritage conditions. Exploitation of identified resources must be made under separate petroleum production leases.

Source Data History: Retention Licence/Lease Application boundaries were sourced from the official Petroleum Register licence/lease application documents. Licence/lease application boundaries are legally defined to follow lines of latitude and longitude, based on potentially several geodetic datums. Processing Steps: Coordinates entered by keyboard from licence/lease application documents. Non GDA94 coordinates transformed into GDA94. Linework cleaned to remove duplicate arcs. Data adjusted for accurate state border and coastline. Where appropriate cadastral parcels removed from licence/lease application polygons. Associated attribute data also captured from licence/lease application documents.

Positional accuracy:Most boundary locations are constructed from lines of latitude and longitude, hence are scale independent. The accuracy of other boundaries is dependent upon the source, eg. state border, coastline, cadastre.
Attribute accuracy:Validation checks are performed periodically, resulting in an estimated 90% accuracy.
Logical consistency:The dataset contains no overshoots, undershoots or duplicate lines. All polygons representing licence/lease applications contain only one label.
Completeness:Spatial data is 100% complete. Associated attribute data is 100% complete.
