This publication is the result of a broad survey of the known clay deposits of the State carried out by the Department of Mines and the Division of Industrial Chemistry of C.S.I.R.O. The survey comprised the inspection of the clay occurrences and the examination of samples by officers of C.S.I.R.O. The object of the work was to obtain information on the characteristics of the clays whereby it would be possible to plan more detailed investigations of the more promising materials, both in the laboratory and in the field. The present report is in the nature of a general preliminary survey of the clays known to the Department of Mines of South Australia, and is designed to amplify and extend the information contained in Bulletin 012 of the Geological Survey of South Australia'". It was also designed to form the basis for a more detailed systematic examination of the more important clay deposits of the State
