The need for a second dam site in the Torrens Gorge was recognized by the Engineering and Water Supply Department many years ago. The Kangaroo Creek Dam, located in the Mount Lofty Ranges 14 miles northeast of Adelaide, has been constructed to provide additional storage for the Adelaide water supply. The first geological investigations in the vicinity of the present dam were carried out by the Mines Department in 1949. Investigations recommenced ten years later and led to final selection of the present dam site. based on geological factors. A critical examination of this site in the mid 1960's led to design changes from a concrete arch dam to the concrete faced rock-fill embankment structure. construction of which was completed in 1969.
