The STRZELECKI 1:250 000 map area lies adjacent to the NSW border in the centre of the Strzelecki Desert, and covers some of the main hydrocarbon producing areas in SA around Moomba. Most of these oil and gas fields are located in the northern half of the map area. The notes describe stratigraphy and tectonism for the early Palaeozoic eastern Warburton Basin, middle Palaeozoic intrusive Big Lake Suite, late Palaeozoic Cooper Basin, Early Permian and Late Triassic sedimentary sequences, Mesozoic Eromanga Basin, Tertiary Callabonna Sub-basin of the Lake Eyre Basin, and the Cainozoic cover. The Pando Formation and Yandruwantha Sand are newly defined stratigraphic names, and the Namur Sandstone, Murta Formation and McKinlay Members are revised. Discussion of the economic geology includes sections on exploration history, distribution and production of hydrocarbons (gas, gas liquids, oil, ethane), and a summary of celestite, heavy minerals, clay, construction sand and road ballast occurrences.
