These guidelines have been prepared by the Department for Energy and Mining to promote communication to establish good working relationships between landowners who have surface rights, and explorers who are authorised under the Energy Resources Act 2000 to enter the land to search for and extract oil, gas and geothermal energy. The landowner and the explorers both have an obligation to care for the land and use its resources in a sustainable way. This can be achieved if each party knows what the other is doing and can integrate their management practices.
