This report covers the period during which the writer accompanied a company-sponsored field crew which is conducting an inaugural (for SA) reconnaissance ground geophysical potential field survey of the Lake Frome Embayment area of the Great Artesian Basin, the object of which is to locate areas, if any, in which natural gas may be found. A number of water wells that had been drilled in this region since 1912 had recorded small but persistent shows of natural gas [Patchawarra bore, Coonanna bore, Coonee Creek bore, Curraworra bore and Glenmanyie bore - cf. the appended drillhole location figure contained in SADM Bulletin 22 published in 1944]. The survey described was begun in April 1947 near Hawker Gate on the SA/NSW state border, by survey Party 2 conducted using the latest practice and technical expertise of geophysical personnel hired from American petroleum exploration companies the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and the Humble Oil and Refining Co. Another component of the survey was managed by geophysical personnel from the Australian Commonwealth Government (survey Party 2). Readings were taken at 2 mile intervals along eight separate traverses that were chosen to pass through locations of known bedrock outcrop, and of existing water well boreholes which were able to provide subsurface lithostratigraphic and sample petrophysical information. General details are given of the preliminary work necessary in the way of equipment and transport, of both the geophysical instruments used and other transport, and of the design of the traverses read, and the choice of instruments used. Some description follows on the field techniques, both geophysical and optical. Reduction of the correct gravity and magnetic values from the field data is mentioned, as is the plotting, contouring and interpretation of the results.
