Report describes the technical feasibility and cost estimates for gasifying brown coal from the Moorlands and Leigh Creek deposits, which are the largest such coal deposits known to exist in South Australia. The coal would be gasified by conversion plants built in Adelaide in the first instance, and in Port Augusta in the second, to allow for the provision of cheap electricity to power them. Coal preparation and transport costs, and the capital costs envisaged to be involved in constructing plants having different capacities of conversion, are presented, as are the estimated final costs for the synthetic gas produced. The latter costs are compared against those forecast to apply in future for gasified Gippsland Basin brown coal mined from the Yallourn deposit.
