A SADM geological survey of the Luxemburg group of abandoned gold/copper mines, 14 miles east of Olary, was carried out during October 1949 to determine their remaining prospectivity. The four major mining areas, discovered in 1887, had exploited various of 10 distinct quartz reefs that outcrop for up to 1000 feet in length, and vary in width from less than 1 foot to 20 feet. The authors' examination of the surface workings, plus those parts of the underground development still accessible above the water table, indicates that the ore recovered (and mostly still lying on site) represents hand-picked stone gathered from small richer patches found within the long, almost barren reefs. These patches appear to be mostly associated with a sheared contact zone between granite and amphibolite country rocks. The total recorded production for the whole field amounts to 304 tons, for 171 ounces of gold bullion. This yield could not have covered the cost of mine development, and it is opined that any future attempts at working the lodes would be even less profitable, despite the current high price of gold.
