An occurrence of Precambrian highly weathered slate, slightly phyllitic and quartz-veined, located in the foothills at Golden Grove, was investigated for its brickmaking potential via a shallow bedrock drilling programme and laboratory testing of recovered slate samples for lime impurities and for physical and refractory properties needed by the dry-press method of brick making. Practically all samples taken proved eminently suitable for the purpose, so estimates of the potential mineable reserves were then made using ore mapping techniques, after allowing for the removal of in situ moisture content and the rejection of posible sub-specification material. An in-place resource of approximately 8 million long tons of clay slate was defined, readily amenable to quarrying operations and removal by road.
