Fifty-eight shallow aircore holes totalling 2140.5 m were drilled by PIRSA's Mineral Resources Group in the Ceduna area during November 1999 to as part of a programme designed to assist regional mapping and geological interpretation of the CHILDARA 1:250 000 geological map sheet by identifying the nature of bedrock below cover. Thirteen holes were completed with diamond tails, producing 49.4 m of NQ2 drill core needed to assist in making geological interpretations and to obtain unweathered rock samples suitable for geochronological dating. Drilling showed that concealed basement to the area likely consists predominantly of Palaeoproterozoic Saint Peter Suite igneous rocks, which range in lithotype from felsic granitoids, diorite and tonalite to gabbro, with minor Mesoproterozoic Hiltaba Suite granite. The CHILDARA Bedrock Drilling Programme has provided valuable new geological information on the composition and possible age of rocks within the western Gawler Craton, which will assist exploration companies with mineral-related target evaluation, and in the formulation of exploration models for the area.
