Eighty-five sites of crystalline basement rocks on the Gawler Craton were inspected to determine which lithological or stratigraphical units have potential for use as dimension stone. The Gawler Craton contains a variety of rock types including granitoids, metasediments and volcanics, which have undergone varying degrees of regional deformation and metamorphism. The Mesoproterozoic Hiltaba Suite is the most prospective unit, because it has not been subjected to major crustal deformation and is relatively massive. The Hiltaba Suite is currently quarried at Streaky Bay, Minippa and Wudinna on northern Eyre Peninsula, and two possible new varieties were outlined in the Wudinna area. Palaeoproterozoic Minbrie Gneiss, a banded pink granite gneiss, is currently quarried near Elbow Hill, southwest of Cowell, and marketed as Royal Mahogany. Granite from Wynbring Rocks and Mulgathing Rocks is relatively massive, but the locations are in remote areas west and north-west of Tarcoola, and are sites of Aboriginal significance. The Palaeoproterozoic Katunga Dolomite is a banded, white and green marble, which may have potential to supply small blocks suitable for floor tiles, and warrants further investigation to locate suitable sites. This report provides dimension stone companies with preliminary geological information, and provides a database for future exploration for dimension stone on the Gawler Craton.
