A report scoping the possible environmental impacts of future seismic operations in the Otway Basin of the South-East of South Australia has been prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Act 2000. This document provides information on the South-East region's physical and socio-economic environment, plus a basic description of past land seismic operations in the region. It should be regarded as providing an overall perspective of existing and potential environmental impacts in the region. In this report, a description of the environmental risks and effects of seismic operations is provided to assist in the assessment of the environmental impact of such operations. To this end, details of the types of operations that may create environmental risks are tabulated. The risk management techniques and strategies to be applied to seismic projects are described, and checklists and data sources are provided. These are intended for use in the effective planning of individual seismic operations. An environmental risk assessment has been conducted to establish levels of risk for, and to canvass the possible consequences of, any environmentally adverse events which may result from seismic operations. Based on this assessment, a set of environmental objectives is herein proposed that will form the basis of a revision to the previously released PIRSA document - Statement of environmental objectives for seismic operations in the Otway Basin, following a process of consultation with stakeholders about this latest environmental impact report. The information here provided has been compiled from extensive data sets, from experience gained while conducting seismic operations in the South-East region, and from the ongoing monitoring of previous seismic survey impacts upon that environment. Also included are references to scientific studies undertaken on specific aspects of the effects of seismic activities on flora and fauna.
