RB 2002/00008 Palynological analyses and dating of Early Oligocene-Early Pliocene deposits in the western Murray Basin, South Australia.

A palynological analysis made of 25 cutting samples from three TEISA program stratigraphic drillholes (PIVA 1, PIVA 5 and PIVA 10) revealed distinctive microfloristic assemblages. Dinoflagellate cysts offer a reliable method for distinguishing the Late Miocene - Early Pliocene Bookpurnong Formation from similar marginal marine sediments, such as the Winnambool Formation, that were deposited during Oligocene - Middle Miocene transgressions. The following palynological zones have been recognised: - Upper Nothofagidites asperus Zone (lowermost Oligocene), - Proteacidites tuberculatus Zone (Late Oligocene - late Early Miocene), - Canthiumidites bellus Zone (replacing the Triporopollenites bellus Zone) from late Early to Middle Miocene, and - Monotocidites galeatus Zone (Late Miocene - Early Pliocene). Reconstruction of the past vegetation history of the area shows the presence of Nothofagus-dominated rainforest, which was replaced by open woodland to sub-forest dominated by Eucalyptus, Casuarinaceae and Araucariaceae. Some mangrove vegetation developed along the coastal fringe.
