Palynological analyses of eight core samples taken from the Caroline 1 drillhole, onshore Gambier Basin, over the depth interval 748-827 m KB, indicate the presence of the Early Eocene, Lower Malvacipollis diversus Spore-Pollen Zone. A reconstruction of the nature of past vegetation cover shows the presence of a mesothermal rainforest dominated by Podocarpaceae, Araucariaceae, Myrtaceae and Proteaceae. There is also evidence of mangrove forest development, where Nypa fruticans grew along tidal fluvial channels.
