Palynological analyses of eight drill cuttings samples from Burrungule 1 well, in the onshore part of the Gambier and Otway Basins, show distinctive microfloristic assemblages. The oldest samples are dated as Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), and correlate with the Forcipites longus spore-pollen zone. The rest of the samples are dated as Late Paleocene, and correlate with the Lygistepollenites balmei spore-pollen zone. Temperate rainforests developed during the early Tertiary, whereas previously tall open forests were common during the Late Cretaceous. Marginal marine to deltaic marine environments persisted throughout the interval sampled.
