18 drill cuttings samples obtained from three shallow PIRSA stratigraphic holes drilled in the Port Lincoln and Mount Hope regions of the southern Eyre Peninsula (LINC 10, LINC 13, LINC 47) have been palynologically analysed and dated. Palynomorphs from the analysed sediments are correlative with the Lower to Middle Nothofagidites asperus spore-pollen Zone (Late Middle to early Late Eocene) extending upwards into the Upper Nothofagidites asperus Zone (Late Eocene to Early Oligocene). Recent suggested changes to the stratigraphic nomenclature of the Eucla Basin mean that these sediments will be correlative with the proposed new Maralinga Formation and Pidinga Formation, which together would replace the existing Wanilla Formation. The interpreted sedimentary environments range from coastal swamp - fluviodeltaic into estuarine and marginal marine. A Nothofagus-dominated temperate rainforest type vegetation is believed to have developed along the palaeoshoreline.
