Palynological analyses of seven cuttings samples taken from the Kingoonya Palaeochannel area drillholes KINPC 1 and KINPC 2 indicate the presence of Late Miocene - Early Pliocene fluvial sediments, whose age is confirmed by recognition of palynomorphs correlated with the Monotocidites galeatus spore-pollen zone. To begin with, the oldest samples indicate that open woodlands with abundant Casuarina and Eucalyptus - type vegetation existed on both drilled sites. Chenopodiaceae, Asteraceae, Gramineae and Acacia species then become prominent uphole, suggesting that changes in the climate and depositional environment were occurring. Lastly, the youngest sampled palynomorphs show that an estuarine-lacustrine environment developed on both sites, with low nutrient soils/sand dunes present along the shorelines.
