Palynological analyses of seven cutting samples from several drillholes in the eastern Eucla Basin, South Australia, indicate the presence of Late Miocene - Early Pliocene sediments, correlated with the Monotocidites galeatus spore-pollen zone. Open woodland with abundant Casuarina and Eucalyptus-type vegetation developed originally on all the sampled sites. With passage of time, Chenopodiaceae, Asteraceae, Gramineae and Acacia became prominent, suggesting that there were changes in the climate and depositional environment. A Miocene marine influence is more pronounced at KIN 21, while estuarine-lacustrine conditions developed on the other sites, which were much closer to the shoreline. Low nutrient soils and sand dunes were present along the shoreline.
