High precision geochronological analyses of metamorphic and inherited magmatic zircon grains, which were obtained from stored percussion drillhole samples of a garnet gneiss that occurs within the Commonwealth Hill magnetic anomaly, north-western Gawler Craton, were investigated using the versatile laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) technique. The results have indicated that regional granulite facies metamorphism occurred at 2458 ± 16 Ma, during the Sleafordian Orogeny, and that the rock is likely to be a correlative of the Christie Gneiss. Mafic lithologies also recorded within the magnetic anomaly footprint include sulphide-bearing metagabbro and charnockite, with the former likely to be a correlative of the South Lake Gabbro. The anomaly occurs under a shallow (< 20 m) cover, and remains prospective for magmatic sulphide mineralisation.
