RB 2007/00005 Timing of the Kimban Orogeny on southern Eyre Peninsula.

Seven samples of Proterozoic basement rocks, representing syn and post-tectonic leucocratic melts that formed during the Kimban Orogeny within the Donington Suite and within cross-cutting Tournefort Metadolerite mafic dykes on the southernmost Eyre Peninsula, have been dated using the SHRIMP U-Pb zircon method to help provide structurally constrained data on the timing of that orogeny in this region of the southern Gawler Craton. The Kimban Orogeny occurred between ~1730 and ~1690 Ma. The results obtained from this study indicate that syn-Kimban (KD1) partial melt formation occurred at 1710 ± 6 Ma. These KD1 leucosomes are cross-cut by leucosomes with an age of 1701 ± 7 Ma, indicating that high-grade metamorphism, partial melting and structural reworking of the Donington Suite occurred over the interval ~1710 - 1700 Ma.
