The Mount Woods Domain (sometimes termed Mount Woods Inlier) is located ~850 km north of Adelaide along the Stuart Highway. The nearest major population centre is Coober Pedy, which lies ~70 km north-west of the northern domain boundary. Geologically, the Mount Woods Domain is located in the northern part of the Gawler Craton. On regional datasets the domain is distinctive due to its significant high aeromagnetic and gravity signatures. Multiple sources of the magnetite and hematite which cause such geophysical signatures are evident within the Mount Woods Domain, including highly magnetic gabbroic (± granitic) units, regional iron-oxide rich alteration, and sedimentary iron formations. The domain is a geologically complex block comprised of a package of metasedimentary lithologies and at least two phases of igneous intrusives. It has a polydeformational history producing high grade metamorphism and multiple alteration phases. The resulting rocks are highly prospective for a number of styles of mineralisation, the one currently most commonly explored for being iron-oxide associated copper-gold (IOCG). This is in part due to the domain being located within the broad-scale Eastern Gawler [Craton] IOCG province, which features this style of deposit at Prominent Hill, at Carrapateena and at the globally significant Olympic Dam. The Prominent Hill IOCG deposit is located adjacent to the southern structural boundary of the Mount Woods Domain. A number of magnetite - rich prospects lying within the Mount Woods Domain are located just north of this southern boundary. This report summaries the presently available open file information concerning current geological understanding of the Mount Woods Domain. A major focus of past research work has been on determining the nature of the Proterozoic basement lithologies, including establishing their deformational and metamorphic histories. Accordingly, useful reference is made herein to important published and unpublished discussions about the domain's stratigraphy, metamorphism, geochemistry, geochronology, and geophysics. Furthermore, the report presents a brief description of mineral prospects which have been identified within the domain, and discusses their various styles.
