Investigations aimed at revising the stratigraphy of the Mount Woods Domain in the north-eastern Gawler Craton have identified numerous metasedimentary and intrusive units. The dominant metasedimentary package has been classified and named the Skylark Metasediments (new name). This unit comprises multiply deformed, upper amphibolite to granulite facies rocks, commonly partially melted, formed from a variety of primary sedimentary rock components. The Skylark Metasediments have a distinctive detrital zircon radiometric age signature dominated by a strong peak at ~1750 Ma, with an earlier peak recognizable at ~1850 Ma. Unconformably overlying the Skylark Metasediments is the Coodnambana Metaconglomerate (new name). U-Pb zircon SHRIMP geochronology suggests that the metaconglomerate is locally sourced from the Skylark Metasediments, and rims of contained zircon grains preserve evidence of what is interpreted to be the last phase of metamorphism in the Mount Woods Domain, at ~1595 Ma. Igneous phases that intrude the Skylark Metasediments include the previously identified Engenina Adamellite and the Hiltaba Suite equivalent Balta Granite, with associated gabbros. A number of other age un-constrained intrusives, including porphyroblastic gneisses, have also been identified and are included in the Mount Woods Complex, which incorporates the Skylark Metasediments and the Coodnambana Metaconglomerate as well as these intrusives.
