The uranium-bearing iron titanate mineral davidite was found by SA Mines Department prospectors on 12th March, 1954, in an area located about 2.5 miles north-east of Mount Victoria Hut. The occurrence is in small discrete zones within foliated biotite gneiss/migmatite, which trend roughly east-west and dip at near to vertical, and show signs of local shearing. Individual lodes vary in width from 4 to 20 feet, and extend discontinuously for at least 300 feet. The uranium ore occurs in the form of davidite associated with small amounts of torbenite and uranophane. The davidite is intergrown with rutile and haematite and is finely disseminated for the most part. Radiometric assays of samples taken from three sites indicate ore grade (0.26% - 0.58% U3O8). Even though the outcrop of mineralisation found is not continuous, were just such surface exposures to be mined, there could be up to 300 tons of mineralised rock recoverable per foot of depth. These findings are thus favourable for conducting further investigations of the deposit, initially by drilling two inclined diamond holes each to 125 feet total depth, with provision for another two such holes nearby if subsurface grade results prove encouraging.
