A private prospector's discovery of highly radioactive alteration minerals at a locality 2.5 miles west-southwest of Myponga township, in residual soils overlying deeply weathered Archaean quartz-mica schists on an elevated spur, was inspected on 22/10/1953 by the author. Specimens of an unidentified yellow ochreous mineral impregnating the soil exposed in a shallow excavation were obtained for analysis, and a radioactivity survey was conducted, which showed that radiation can be traced on the surface for a length of 20-30 feet and over a width of 2-3 feet. Radiometric analyses of two differing size grab samples gave results of 8.6% and 17% U3O8. Chemical analysis data for the same samples is pending. The occurrence has subsequently been pegged as a mineral claim, and surface trenching by the claimholder is underway to better define the extent of the mineralisation and to identify the primary uranium-bearing mineral believed to be present within the underlying basement schist.
