The molten chloride process previously described has been modified to enable the production of electrolytic uranium metal powder directly from impure oxide. The grade of metal obtained is not sufficiently high for atomic energy purposes. High purity metal may be produced when pure oxide is used as feed material. A method of preliminary purification of impure oxide is described in which crystalline UO2 is produced electrolytically from a chloride melt containing UO2OI2. Production of pure metal from this electrolytic UO2, and from pure oxide from another source, is shown to be possible, using the modified chloride process. Product purity is affected by contamination derived from graphite and mullite crucibles.
