Following a reconnaissance of mound springs in the Great Artesian Basin, two mounds about 3 1/2 miles north-west of Coward Springs were tested by percussion drill with sampling tube for possible fluorine deposits. No economic deposits were found, but a surface enrichment of 0.16-0.19 percent fluorine suggests possible concentration by evaporation of fluorine-bearing artesian waters. Palaeontological studies by N.H Ludbrook confirm that the clays and sands forming the mounds were brought up with the artesian water from underlying Lower Cretaceous sediments. In one boring the aquifer is within only 55 feet of the surface, whereas at Coward the depth to the aquifer is 308 feet.
