This report reviews the available information on the region and presents a preliminary appraisal of the past nickel exploration data supplied by South Western Mining Co. Ltd. Current field and laboratory information has also been included. The study shows that the Archaean to Proterozoic basic and ultrabasic rocks of the Giles Complex, which are associated with extensive areas of secondarily enriched nickel mineralisation such as garnierite, occupy a regional Palaeozoic - formed synclinal structure which has been modified by major fault and shear zones. This interpretation is being used as a guide for planning the current mapping programme being conducted by the Geochemistry Section of the Geological Survey of South Australia. New geological and geochemical data is presented which confirms the lateritic origin of the enriched nickel deposits. Recommendations are made for further exploration of the area.
