A combined gravity and magnetic survey was conducted over an area extending from Fisher Siding (on the Transcontinental Railway) northward to Mount Davies in the Tomkinson Ranges, to investigate the possibility of a deep basin occurring between the Nullarbor Plain stable shelf and the Musgrave nucleus, as suggested from the results of trial airborne aeromagnetic surveys conducted by the BMR in 1954. A significant gravity low coincides with the assumed basin, suggesting that such a basin (which has been called the Officer Basin) actually exists.
