Trialling of precipitation and leaching techniques for the recovery of Y, Sc and heavy lanthanides from process sulphate liquors gave low recoveries. A solvent extraction process using EHPA (di-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid) was proposed for recovering scandium, with advice for possible modifications to also recover thorium, yttrium and heavy lanthanides.
