Experiments were carried out which measured the rates at which chlorine reacts with oxidized ilmenite contained in, and also the rates of heat transfer to, a chlorination reactor set up for extracting titanium dioxide from ilmenite - bearing beach sands. No practical method was indicated for achieving the necessary heat transfer within a large scale reactor.
