Twenty-one company petroleum exploration wells drilled in north and north-east South Australia and nearby Queensland penetrate basement rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to probable Devonian. A study was done on continuous dipmeter records from these wells, where available. Known and suspected Ordovician rocks are steeply dipping. The Cambrian and ?Devonian beds of the Gidgealpa - Merrimelia area have average dips of between 10 and 36 degrees.
