In an earlier report Wilmshurst (1963) proposed a novel method for extracting bromine from the residual liquor (bittern) resulting from the production of sodium chloride by solar evaporation of sea water. The bromine was to be released by chlorine, extracted from the bittern by a solvent extraction process and converted to ethylene dibromide by contacting with ethylene while dissolved in the solvent. The ethylene dibromide was to be recovered by distillation. Of a number of solvents available, carbon tetrachloride was chosen as most suitable. A preliminary estimate of the cost of production of ethylene dibromide was also given and, while favourable, was shown to be influenced to a major degree by loss of solvent from the extraction circuit. A recommendation was made to construct and operate a small scale pilot plant, in order to estimate more accurately the solvent loss in an actual production plant, and to reveal any other factors which might affect the success of such a plant. In this report the results of the pilot run, and recommendations arising from this work are described. A revised estimate of the cost of production of ethylene dibromide has also been made.
