In connection with the issue of design for well casing installations in potential gas wells in the Coopers Creek Sub-basin, the SADM Petroleum Section was approached by the Petroleum Engineer to supply a lithological description of the top 1000 feet of strata normally encountered in this area. Delhi-Santos' Moomba 4 well was chosen as an example. Rotary drill cuttings taken at 30 foot intervals down to 1000 feet depth were supplied to the Department by Delhi Australian Petroleum Ltd, and these were washed, prepared and logged by the Petroleum Section. The near-surface section encountered in Moomba 4 comprises sediments of Lower Tertiary to Recent age. The sediments can be correlated with similar sections known from the surface or from shallow depth in the Lake Eyre Basin. The sediments occurring above 534 feet KB depth in this well are largely unconsolidated, and there is no evidence that any additional features other than normal overburden pressure have to be considered from an engineering point of view.
