There are four main zone sequences based on planktonic foraminiferal assemblages which have been used in the Otway Basin. The zones are correlated with the sequence of P- Zones and N- Zones of low latitudes, recently given quantitative (radiometric) and better chronostratigraphic perspective. An accurate correlation is possible only at certain horizons because local biostratigraphy still is evolving and many important tropical species have not been found. However, this attempt gives a perspective for regional stratigraphy and for correlations using other fossil groups. Thus, a zone sequence based on pollen and spores can be applied in favourable circumstances to marine and non-marine sections, and correlated through association at several levels with the planktonic foraminiferal succession.
