This is the first detailed study of the Proterozoic Magnesite Series of Reyner, 1955 (see SADM Rep. Invest. 6). Informal stratigraphic units are described and correlated with the Skillogalee Dolomite, Myrtle Springs Formation, Sturt Tillite and Permian reworked glacigene sediments. Emphasis is given to fossiliferous black chert and stromatolite horizons occurring in a 1600 metres thick Adelaidean sequence lying beneath the Sturt Tillite. The Boorthanna outcrop section is unique among fossiliferous Precambrian sections in being abundantly fossiliferous at numerous horizons over a very great stratigraphic thickness (1300 metres), and it may become the standard of comparison for other Precambrian microfloras. An appendix on micropalaeontologic techniques for studying Precambrian rocks is included.
