Pebble size, shape, and roundness distribution patterns were used to interpret transportation directions and provenance of sediments in the Permian Merrimelia Formation within the Cooper Basin. The 20 largest pebbles from available cores in each well were measured for size, shape, roundness and lithology. The pebble size and lithology distributions show transportation associated with progressive sorting from the Gidgealpa - Innamincka Anticlinal Trend, east and west respectively into the Nappamerrie and Patchawarra troughs. The shape and roundness distributions show similar trends with the larger pebbles being more rounded and more spherical than the smaller pebbles. Erosion of pre-Permian outcrop occurred along the Gidgealpa - Innamincka Anticlinal Trend, and the resultant pebbles underwent strong abrasion with little transport, possibly in a beach environment, in an area close to the source. Sub-aqueous density flows, involving little abrasion, probably dispersed the pebbles into adjacent troughs.
