Known deposits of Eocene brown coal within the basin occur in 3 coalfields. Drilling results from 1975, which are presented and integrated with previous drill hole data, indicate a northern extension of the Inkerman-Balaklava Coalfield. Reserves are estimated at 720 million tonnes. There are also indicated reserves at Clinton and Whitwarta of 290 and 150 million tonnes respectively. Seam correlation between the Inkerman-Balaklava and Clinton Coalfields has been achieved by comparing seam thicknesses, lithological successions, and proximate analyses. The coalfields occur within discrete fault-bounded structural areas. Syndepositional fault movement has controlled the distribution and nature of the coal. Iso-ash and isopach maps indicate that the coal was deposited in large enclosed lakes or swamps, with clastic and some organic material introduced from surrounding highlands.
