The Copley Basin is one of four small Upper Triassic basins occupying a folded Adelaidean depression in the Leigh Creek area. It covers approximately 7 square kilometres. Thirteen rotary drillholes totalling 1810 m were put down in 1974-75, which outlined an area of 2.91 square km of coal subcrop, encompassing total indicated reserves of 22.8 million tonnes from two seams. The seams have a combined average thickness of 5.6 m, and overburden thickness ranges from 10 to 150 m. Each of these two seams are interpreted as being split by lensing sand bodies which, through differential compaction, caused the migration of the depositional centre from the east to the west of the now-known basin area. The sandy Triassic shale and coal succession is correlated with the Upper Series coal measures of the Telford Basin. No further work is recommended until it becomes desirable to upgrade reserves from indicated to proven.
