This report presents the results from zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb geochronological age determinations, and both trace and rare earth element abundance geochemical analyses, performed on fifteen outcrop and drill core samples originating from the central-western Gawler Craton. Most of the samples were derived from variably deformed felsic to intermediate granitoid rocks. The samples were collected from stratigraphic units mapped as being parts of the Archaean to Palaeoproterozoic Mulgathing Complex, as well as from Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic units interpreted to intrude Mulgathing Complex basement. These units lie within the boundaries of the Wilgena, Christie, Fowler, and Nuyts domains. However, limited geochronological data exist to support the interpretation of widespread Mulgathing Complex basement being present in the central Gawler Craton, especially in the Wilgena Domain. The scarcity of basement rock age data that have yet been obtained in this region presents challenges for making both stratigraphic interpretations of, and acceptable correlations between, the granitoid rocks. The majority of recovered zircon grain U–Pb ages obtained in this study are late Palaeoproterozoic. The ages are interpreted to reflect magmatic crystallisation, based on observed zircon morphologies, grain internal characteristics, and both trace and rare earth element abundance data. These ages are related to those of igneous rocks formed in magmatic episodes spanning the c. 1730–1690 Ma Kimban Orogeny (e.g., Peter Pan Supersuite, Tunkillia Suite), of which there is a known record in the region. Two granitic to granodioritic samples returned late Palaeoproterozoic ages consistent with magmatism that occurred during the emplacement of the c. 1620 Ma St Peter Suite. One of these two samples is located in the Tarcoola region of the central Gawler Craton, and is the only known St Peter Suite age in the area. Three granitic samples returned early Palaeoproterozoic Mulgathing ages, and one sample, a cordierite-garnet paragneiss, records garnet-grade metamorphism at c. 2450 Ma. Finally, three granitic gneisses located toward the northern extent of the Fowler Domain record variable degrees of deformation. Two of the three gneisses are comparatively low strain and give late Kimban ages, recording inheritance from a Mulgathing source, while an interpreted Mulgathing-age mylonite potentially records Kimban-age metamorphism, as indicated by rare earth element concentration patterns in zircon.
