Sedimentary-hosted copper deposits are the second most important source of copper in the world with most South Australian sediment-hosted copper occurrences located within the Adelaide Rift Complex, Torrens Hinge Zone and Stuart Shelf. In response to the growing need for more copper, the Geological Survey of South Australia conducted a Quantitative mineral-resource assessment (QMRA) based on a well-defined global grade-tonnage model. The QMRA is a project to develop and test methods of assessing potential for undiscovered mineral resources within South Australia. The QMRA helps to outline the principal areas in South Australia that have potential for undiscovered sedimentary-hosted copper and to estimate the probable amounts of sedimentary-hosted copper to a depth of 1 kilometre below the surface. Helping to provide a framework for reducing uncertainty and supporting decisions concerning potential mineral resources.
