A study has been undertaken of the South Australian portion of the Great Artesian Basin from the geochemical viewpoint, to try to determine favourable areas within it for the accumulation of oil or natural gas, by invoking the hydrological concept of petroleum occurrence. Over a period of nine months the author has collected, sorted and plotted all the available information from 1738 wells relating to the subterranean waters of this basin, with the aim of revealing the process of circulation of these waters including sites of their accumulation, movement, metamorphism and drainage, so that the position of an exploratory test and its optimum depth can be determined.
