Plans are now completed for the mining of pyrites from extensive deposits at Nairne, a distance of 25 miles from Adelaide. The pyrites will be concentrated by flotation methods, then railed to Adelaide for use in a sulphuric acid plant. The pyrites is to be first dried, then flash roasted to produce a gas rich in sulphur dioxide for conversion to sulphuric acid in a Simon Carves - Monsanto Contact Type Plant. This plant will be the largest single acid plant in the British commonwealth. This paper briefly describes the history of the project and gives some details of the proposed methods and equipment to be used both at the mine at Nairne, and the plant at Port Adelaide. Brief mention is also made of experiments which confirmed the suitability of the proposed methods.
